Understanding Comics The Invisible Art by Scott McCloud

Sequential Art is its own major at other colleges and this book is really proof why. As shown in the book on page 48, one might be a master at realistic drawing or a ground-breaking proficient writer, yet lack the skills to meet along the scale to which comics are made. That being said the idea/purpose to surface section really did not click with me. I think I saw the words and understood them, but the actual content did not click with me. I cannot tell if it is my own ignorance that does not want to hear it, or if I just need to be older/more seasoned to understand. I just switched majors and that aspect of truly never reaching the core of art really struck me. What if I am only doing things for the structure of it all? Week 10 Ranma and Alita thoughts

Despite its nudity Ranma still feels like it's meant for a younger audience from the characters and subject matters. I took a browse at Maison Ikkoku also by Rumika Takahashi and the style is different and feels more mature. Maybe it has to do with the older cast and the women wearing make up. It felt like more of a slice of life or coming of age story opposed to comedy? The idea of the cursed ponds/lake is very fun and opens it up for a multitude of gags. In that you see the repeating jokes and the comedy of certain characters through the relationships they build. There are also themes such as Martial Arts and supernatural strength. I can see younger readers relating to both Ranma and Akane. There are definitely themes I have seen carry through the other manga I have consumed or the Korean dramas my mother repeatedly tells me about. Week Four: Graphic Novel and Blankets

What struck me most about Graphic Novel is how the book relies less and less on words as the novel goes on. Even from the beginning though the words are used as part of the composition. The way the words are written (typography) is even thought about. I think it's also interesting that this book is tackling more adult themes compared to some previous work. That being said, it feels very grounded. The moment where the main character is shouting at lighting to represent god really was cinematic. Even the portrayal of God as lighting and nature could be driven into as a visual metaphor oppose to a written one. Note in the beginning where you can see the face. You feel it through the body language and the heavy rain pouring on him. The visual really sets the tone of the weight of the novel. The clothes hanging in the backgrounds and closeness of the buildings really sets it down in an urban environment. ...
